FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Insurance Questions? Start Here.

From getting a quote to managing your policy, we’ve answered some of the questions our clients ask most often. If you don’t find what you need, our local team is always here to help.

BEFORE YOU START

Getting a Quote

What information do I need to get an insurance quote?

It depends on the type of insurance you’re shopping for, but having your current policy information, driver or property details, and relevant coverage information available can make the process easier. Our team will let you know exactly what is needed and help you gather any missing information.

How quickly can I get a quote or have a change made to my policy?
We work to provide quotes and process policy changes as quickly as possible. Timing varies depending on the type of request, the insurance carrier, underwriting requirements, and whether additional information or documentation is needed. You can help keep things moving by providing requested information promptly, signing required documents, and making any necessary payments on time. If you know about an upcoming change – such as buying a vehicle, closing on a home, or adding a driver – reaching out ahead of time whenever possible gives our team more time to make sure everything is handled properly.
Do I have to know exactly what coverage I need before I call?
No. That’s part of why we’re here. A licensed member of our team can talk through your situation, explain available coverage options, and help you understand the questions to consider before choosing a policy.
Can you compare options from more than one insurance company?
As an independent agency, NY Insurance Hub works with multiple insurance carriers. Availability varies by coverage type and underwriting eligibility, but our team can explore appropriate carrier options and help you understand the differences.
Can NY Insurance Hub help me find a competitive rate?
Absolutely – finding competitive value is a top priority for our team. Because NY Insurance Hub is an independent agency, we can work with multiple insurance carriers and compare available options, coverage, and pricing based on your needs and eligibility. However, no agency can guarantee a particular rate or that one carrier will always be the least expensive. Premiums are determined by many factors that can vary by policy type and carrier, including your location, the property or vehicles being insured, coverage selections, claims and insurance history, driving history where applicable, credit-based insurance information where permitted and used, carrier underwriting guidelines, and broader state and regional insurance market conditions. Our goal is to help you find a strong combination of appropriate coverage and competitive pricing among the options available to you.
Is the lowest-priced quote always the best option?
Not necessarily. Price matters, but so do coverage limits, deductibles, exclusions, carrier fit, and the protection a policy actually provides. Our approach is coverage-first: understand what you need, then look for competitive value.
Can I bundle my home and auto insurance?
Often, yes. Depending on the carriers and your eligibility, placing multiple policies with the same insurer may offer convenience and potential discounts. We’ll help you compare the overall coverage and value rather than looking at a discount alone.

WORKING WITH OUR TEAM

What to Expect From NY Insurance Hub

What happens after I request a quote?
A member of our team will review the information you provide and determine what else may be needed. A licensed insurance professional will handle coverage recommendations and insurance advice. We’ll keep you updated as the quote moves through the process and answer questions along the way.
How long will it take to bind my policy?
There is no single binding timeframe that applies to every policy. Timing depends on the carrier, underwriting requirements, the type of insurance, required documents, payment, inspections, and other factors. Coverage should never be assumed to be active until you receive confirmation that it has been bound and the effective date has been established.
When does my coverage actually begin?
Your coverage begins on the effective date confirmed for the bound policy. A quote by itself is not proof that coverage is in force. If you’re replacing existing insurance, do not cancel your current policy until your new coverage has been confirmed.
Who will I work with after my policy is issued?
NY Insurance Hub is built around a team approach. Depending on what you need, you may work with your licensed agent, a client service representative, our office team, or another specialist. If you aren’t sure who to contact, start with us and we’ll get you to the right person.
Do I have to come to the office to work with
NY Insurance Hub or get a quote?
No. We understand your time is valuable, and coming into the office is not always necessary or convenient. Much of the quoting and service process can be handled by phone, email, text, or other available electronic communication. If documents, signatures, or additional information are needed, our team will let you know the easiest way to provide them. And if you prefer to meet with us in person, we are happy to help that way too.
Will you explain my coverage to me?
Yes. Education is a core part of how we serve clients. Licensed members of our team can help explain your coverage, answer questions, and discuss how your insurance relates to your needs. We want you to understand the protection you’re choosing – not simply receive a stack of policy documents.
How often should I review my insurance coverage?
It is a good idea to review your insurance regularly and anytime something significant changes in your life or business. Our team can help with periodic insurance reviews, but you know what is changing in your life before we do, so keeping us informed is important. Reach out if you are buying or selling a home or vehicle, renovating, adding a new driver, having a child, sending a child to college, purchasing something valuable, starting or changing a business, or experiencing another major change. When possible, telling us before the change happens gives us the best opportunity to review your options and help make sure the appropriate coverage is in place.

KEEPING YOUR POLICY CURRENT

Policy Support & Changes

How do I make a change to my policy?
Contact our team and tell us what has changed. Depending on the request, we may need additional information or documentation. Some changes require carrier approval. We will help route the request appropriately and let you know what to expect.
I bought a new car. What should I do?
Contact us as soon as possible with the vehicle information and any financing or leasing details. Do not assume a new vehicle is automatically covered in every circumstance; policy terms and timeframes vary. A licensed team member can help confirm what needs to happen.
I'm moving or buying a new home. When should I contact you?
As early as possible. Insurance can be an important part of the closing process, and underwriting may require property information, inspections, replacement-cost details, or other documentation. Giving the team more lead time can help avoid last-minute surprises.
Can I add or remove a driver from my auto policy?
Potentially, depending on the circumstances and carrier rules. Contact us with the details so the appropriate team member can review the request and tell you what information is needed.
What if something changes in my business?
Let us know. New locations, employees, vehicles, equipment, services, revenue changes, contracts, or other operational changes may affect your insurance needs. A licensed agent can help determine whether your coverage should be reviewed.
Where can I find my policy documents or insurance ID cards?
Availability depends on your insurance carrier. Many carriers provide online or mobile access to policy documents and ID cards. Our team can also help point you in the right direction if you’re having trouble locating what you need.

MANAGING YOUR POLICY

Billing & Payments

Where do I make my insurance payment?
Payment methods vary by carrier. In many cases, payments can be made directly through your insurance company’s website, app, phone system, or billing portal. For convenience, visit our Carrier Directory to find carrier-specific payment and customer service information. If you are still unsure where to pay, contact our team and we’ll help point you in the right direction.
What should I do if my payment is late?
Contact us and/or your insurance carrier as soon as possible. Do not assume that a late payment automatically means your policy is still active or that a payment will automatically reinstate canceled coverage. The options available depend on the carrier, policy, billing status, and any notices that have been issued.
I received a cancellation notice for nonpayment. What should I do?
Act promptly. Review the notice carefully for the amount due, cancellation date, and payment instructions, and contact the carrier or our team right away. New York law provides specific notice and payment rules for many property/casualty policies, but your individual situation and policy status should be confirmed rather than assumed.
Can NY Insurance Hub waive a late fee or change my carrier's payment deadline?
Generally, billing terms, late fees, installment schedules, and cancellation or reinstatement decisions are controlled by the insurance carrier or billing arrangement. We can help you understand the notice and communicate with the carrier, but we cannot promise that a fee will be waived or coverage reinstated.
Why did my premium change?
Premiums can change for many reasons, including claims history, policy changes, insured values, rating factors, market conditions, and carrier rate changes. Starting August 24, 2026, New York requires certain notices and explanations for qualifying premium increases on specified auto and residential property policies. If you have questions about a renewal increase, contact us and we’ll help you understand the information available.
Is there anything I can do to help lower my insurance rate?
Potentially. The factors that affect premium vary by carrier and type of insurance, but there may be steps that help over time. Maintaining a strong payment and insurance history, avoiding lapses or cancellations, improving credit-based insurance factors where permitted and applicable, maintaining a safe driving record, and reviewing your deductibles and coverage options may all affect pricing. Depending on the carrier, discounts may also be available for bundling policies, completing an approved defensive driving course, using a qualifying telematics or safe-driving program, installing certain home safety or security features, or meeting other carrier-specific requirements. Not every discount applies to every policy, and lowering coverage simply to reduce price can leave you with less protection. Our team can review the discounts and options available through your carrier and discuss whether shopping other carriers makes sense.
Can I change my payment plan?
Possibly. Available installment plans and payment methods vary by carrier. Contact our team or your carrier to see what options are available for your policy.

WHEN SOMETHING HAPPENS

Claims

What should I do if I need to file a claim?
First, make sure everyone is safe and address any emergency needs. Then document the loss when it is safe to do so and report the claim promptly according to your policy and carrier instructions. You can contact the carrier directly or reach out to our team if you need help finding the correct claims information.
Should I call NY Insurance Hub or the insurance company to report a claim?
Either may be appropriate depending on the situation. Many carriers offer 24/7 claims reporting, which can be especially useful after hours or when immediate response is needed. Our team can help you locate the carrier’s claims contact information and provide agency support during the process.
What information should I have when reporting a claim?
Helpful information may include your policy number, date and location of the loss, a description of what happened, photos or video when safe and appropriate, contact information for involved parties, police or incident reports when applicable, and receipts or documentation related to the loss.
Should I wait to report a claim until I know how much the damage will cost?
Review your policy’s reporting requirements and contact the appropriate carrier or licensed insurance professional if you’re unsure. Policies can contain notice requirements, and some types of claims have specific deadlines. Delaying solely because the full cost is not yet known may create problems.
Who decides whether my claim is covered?
The insurance carrier evaluates the claim under the terms, conditions, exclusions, and limits of the policy. NY Insurance Hub can help you understand the process and communicate with the carrier, but the carrier ultimately makes the claim determination.
How long will my claim take?
Every claim is different. Timing depends on the type and severity of the loss, documentation, inspections, repairs, third parties, and carrier investigation. New York has claim-handling requirements for insurers in certain situations, but there is no single timeline that applies to every claim.
What if I disagree with the way my claim is being handled?
Start by asking the adjuster for an explanation and contact our team if you need help understanding the process or communicating with the carrier. Depending on the circumstances, additional escalation options may be available, including contacting the New York State Department of Financial Services.

LOCAL SERVICE. REAL SUPPORT.

We’re Here to Help

Who should I contact if I have a question but don't know who handles it?
Start with NY Insurance Hub. You don’t need to know which person or department you need before reaching out. Our team will help route your question to the right person.
Can I call, email, or text the office?
Use the contact methods published by NY Insurance Hub for the type of request you have. For time-sensitive coverage changes, cancellations, or claims, do not rely on a message alone as proof that a request has been completed. Wait for confirmation.
Can a client service representative answer questions about my coverage?
Our client service team can assist with many administrative and service needs and help connect you with the right resources. Questions that involve insurance advice, coverage recommendations, or other activities requiring a license will be handled by an appropriately licensed team member.
What if I need proof of insurance or a certificate?
Contact our team with the details of what is being requested and when you need it. Depending on the policy and request, additional information or carrier processing may be required. A certificate or evidence of insurance does not change the terms of the underlying policy.
How responsive is your team when I need help?
We know how frustrating it can be when you have an insurance question and cannot reach someone. At NY Insurance Hub, we strive to provide timely quotes and responsive service throughout the life of your policy. When you contact our office, you are working with a local team – not a large, anonymous call center. Whether you have a question, need a change, or are not sure what to do next, our team will work to get you an answer as quickly as possible.
What happens if I have a question or need support after hours?
If you need carrier assistance after hours, visit our Carrier Directory for direct customer service, payment, and claims information. Many carriers offer 24/7 claims reporting, which can be especially helpful when an urgent loss needs to be reported outside our normal office hours. If you need assistance from NY Insurance Hub directly, you can call and leave a voicemail, send us a text, or email our team. We’ll respond as soon as possible when we are back in the office. If there is an immediate emergency involving safety, contact the appropriate emergency services first.
Do you have a local office, and can I stop by?
Yes. NY Insurance Hub is a local insurance agency with an office in Latham, New York. Our regular office hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM-5:00 PM, but our team maintains some flexibility because agents may be meeting with clients, visiting local businesses, or attending community events. You are welcome to stop by, but we recommend calling ahead or scheduling an appointment so we can make sure the right person is available and ready to help. And if coming into the office is not convenient, many insurance needs can be handled by phone, email, or text.
What should I do if I receive a letter, email, or notice from my insurance carrier?
Please do not ignore communications from your insurance carrier. Notices about payments, renewals, underwriting requirements, inspections, policy changes, cancellations, or other requests can be time-sensitive and may require action. Review mail and electronic communications when you receive them. If you do not understand something or think a notice may be incorrect, contact our office. We are happy to review it with you, communicate with the carrier when appropriate, and help determine what needs to happen next. Staying on top of carrier communications and letting us know about concerns early can help prevent avoidable issues such as missed deadlines, nonpayment, or a lapse in coverage.
